AfD Proposes Shift in Energy Policy and End to Renewable Subsidies.
On Sunday, the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) pledged to promote the return of nuclear energy and to make possible the operation of the Russian Nord Stream pipeline.
“We will continue diversifying the supply of gas and oil, in Germany’s interest, to avoid new dependencies on imports and to make possible the operation of existing supply routes such as the Nord Stream pipeline,” states a document published after a meeting of AfD’s parliamentary group.
The far-right party has frequently lamented the loss of Germany’s main gas supply route and has criticized the inaction of German authorities in clarifying what happened to the pipeline.
At the time of the explosive attack in September 2022, no gas was flowing through either branch of the pipeline, one of which was rendered unusable, as Russia had months earlier halted gas supplies to Germany, while Nord Stream 2 had never entered into operation.
The text reads, “The German AfD party calls for the lifting of sanctions against Russia and the resumption of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. The party also proposes cutting aid to Ukraine and tightening rules for Ukrainian refugees.”
Currently, a former member of the Ukrainian intelligence service remains detained in Germany awaiting trial, accused of having coordinated a group of divers who went into the Baltic Sea to place explosives on the infrastructure.
On Sunday, AfD also pledged to eliminate subsidies for the construction of solar and wind energy infrastructure and to continue using gas and coal beyond 2038.
“Political reassessment of nuclear energy is necessary, and it must be technologically reactivated: as part of this, there must be a moratorium on the dismantling of decommissioned nuclear power plants, the repair and reactivation of existing facilities, an extension of their service life and an assessment of the suitability of modern reactor types,” the AfD document states.
